Improving your Relationship by Fred Morris

Tips in fostering closer relationships can be found everywhere, in every magazine as well as in men and women websites. The availability of such information has only magnified the impact of the results of the statistics on current conditions of relationships in this increasingly modernized world.

With the ever increasing number of divorce and annulment cases in the countries around the globe, the discussions on how to improve one's relationship has become a necessity. Here are some of the juicy bits on how a typical couple can work out issues and problems that a normal couple encounters.

Having and Keeping Faith

Some couples put God or religion at the core of their relationship. In believing that a much greater force has brought them together to become life partners, having and keeping faith gives them a common ground that makes an excellent foundation for a relationship. This way, the couple surpasses rough patches together, having faith in God and to the love of one another. Faith, in whatever form, provides the couple a great motivation in achieving personal as well as professional goals.

Support System

In a relationship, each person must be treated as an individual with individual goals and dreams that will make the person fulfilled in other aspects of life. One of the secrets in being successful in the relationship department of life is by giving and gaining support to and from your partner.

Learning to Communicate

Often, couple's quarrels start with miscommunications. Even in other forms of relationships, a problematic means of communication will always be the core of a problem. It is true that giving and gaining support can foster better relationships. However, to actually give and be given with support, you need to effectively communicate your intentions first to your partner. When one fails to do that, he will find a hard time getting all the support he needs. Remember that as a couple, you are a team of two people that understand each other. Not only that, effective communication also prevents arguments.

Learn to Make Compromises

Treat your partner as an individual with different thoughts, needs and ideals as yours. Sometimes, these thoughts and ideals may clash. This often leads to arguments and fights. When the argument becomes heated, the couple should stop, reflect on everything that was said and done. The thoughts and decisions of one's partner must be respected, so yours will be respected to. The funny thing is that all the trouble can be avoided if the couple communicates well with one another. Fully understanding your partner enables you to become more willing to bend for the good of the other.

Set Priorities

This is particularly important among married couples. Often, we become hesitant or reluctant to cut our family ties. Inevitably, even though we are already married, our siblings, parents and friends expect the same kind of relationship that has bonded you with them. But once you have committed yourself to your partner, the relationship should be the top priority, which means he and the family that you two have created over your family is your top priority. This is supposed to make all decision making, particularly those involving money and time, a lot easier.

Business Letter Etiquette

Business etiquette is fundamentally concerned with building relationships founded upon courtesy and politeness between business personnel. Etiquette, and especially business etiquette, is a means of maximising your potential by presenting yourself positively.

Writing a business letter is not simply a matter of expressing your ideas clearly. The way you write a letter and the etiquette you employ may have a significant impact on your success or failure in business.

Failure to observe correct business letter etiquette can result in you adopting an inappropriate tone, causing offense or misunderstandings, lack of clarity or purpose and hostility or soured relations.

The foundation of good business letter etiquette is ‘Think before you write’. You should be considering who the letter is addressed to, how and why? This will then influence style, content and structure.

Here we cover some of the main issues relating to good business letter etiquette:

Addressing the Letter

Always make sure you have spelt the recipient’s name correctly. It may sound simple, but you would be surprised at how many people fail to do so. The recipient’s name should include titles, honours or qualifications if deemed necessary.

Many people use the ‘Dear Sir/Yours Faithfully’ formula when addressing the receiver. Although this is acceptable for routine matters it is impersonal and should not be used when dealing with those you know, queries or complaints. With these the ‘Dear Mr…./Yours Sincerely’ formula should be adopted.

Once a certain level of familiarity is reached it is not considered bad etiquette to use phrases such as ‘Kind Regards’ or ‘All the best’ at the end of the letter.

Confidentiality

If the content of the letter is sensitive, personal or confidential it must be marked appropriately. Marking the letter ‘confidential’ will suffice in highlighting this fact. If you only want the letter read by the receiver without the interception of a secretary or PA, mark it as ‘Private’, ‘Personal’ or ‘Strictly Confidential’. If you have received such a business letter it is good etiquette to reciprocate and ensure that all future correspondence is kept at that level of confidentiality.

Style

Proper business letter etiquette requires that a consistent and clear approach, combined with courtesy, be employed. As a rule of thumb, aim to keep all business letters formal in style. Even when the receiver is familiar to you, it is advisable maintain a certain level of business etiquette as the letter may be seen by others or referred to by a third party in the future.

However, this does not mean you should use long or uncommon words to express yourself. This merely looks odd and makes the letter unreadable. It is best to read a letter first and consider whether you would speak to that person face to face in the same way. If not, then re-write it.

Letters should be signed personally. It looks unprofessional, cold and somewhat lazy if a letter is left unsigned. However, having a secretary or PA sign on your behalf is not considered a breach of business etiquette.

Humour

Humour can be used in business letters but only when the writer is completely positive the recipient will understand the joke or pun. From a business etiquette perspective it may be wise to avoid humour. This is because firstly, the letter may be read during a crisis, after receiving bad news or on a sombre occasion. Any other time the humour may have been appreciated but under these circumstances it may dramatically backfire. Secondly, the written word is open to misinterpretation. Your sarcastic or ironic remark may be taken the wrong way. Thirdly, it is possible that the letter may be read by a third party who may deem the humour inappropriate and pursue a complaint of some sort.

Responding

Good business letter etiquette calls for letters to be responded to promptly or within certain guidelines. This may normally be considered as 5 working days. If this is not possible then some sort of acknowledgement should be sent either by letter, fax, phone or e-mail.

Always use reference numbers or clearly state the purpose of the letter at the top, for example, ‘Re: Business Letter Etiquette Enquiry’. This allows the receiver to trace correspondence and immediately set your letter within a context.

When replying to points or questions the proper etiquette is to respond in the same order as they were asked.

Managing Conflict

Letters are often an arena for conflicts or disputes. Even in these circumstances there are rules of business letter etiquette that should be adhered to.

If you initiate the dispute then, 1) Explain and set out your case simply and clearly to the most appropriate person, 2) Offer information that may be required by the other party to help answer questions, 3) Indicate a time scale by which you expect a reply or the matter to be resolved.

If you are receiving the dispute then 1) inform senior colleagues who may be affected or who may be able to offer assistance, 2) Submit all replies in draft form for a senior colleague to check, 3) Stick to the facts and the merits of the case and do not allow emotions to become involved, 4) Be polite, patient and courteous.

Using business etiquette in all matters and especially in business letters will ensure you communicate effectively, avoid misunderstandings and maximise your business potential.

Fall is a Four Letter Word

Research reveals that 90% of hip fractures are a result of falls, and most of those falls were preventable. Of the elderly fallers who require hospitalization, only 50% will survive past one year post-fall.

Our system of balance (vestibular system) is in our inner ear. It is actually part of the structure of the ear and contains three semi-circular tubes through which fluid flows each time we move. Each of these tubes is oriented in a different plane of space. The movement of the fluid over nerve endings signals to our brain where we are in space - like a small internal gyroscope. The movement of the fluid in the horizontal semi-circular canal moves in the same direction as our eyes move. (If you want to know why people throw-up on amusement park rides, send me an e-mail, snetherland@assistedca.com, and I'll send you the details!)

Balance is defined as the process by which we control our center of mass (COM) over our base of support. There are three body systems involved in balance - an intact vestibular system, vision and proprioceptive feedback. Proprioceptive feedback is the knowledge of where your body is in space without your having to look. As you're reading this, you can tell if you are sitting or standing. Good balance is dependent on at least two of these three systems working.

There are several medical factors that influence an individual's risk for falling:
Infections
Abnormal Blood Pressure
Thyroid Disorders
Diabetic Neuropathy
Decreased Vision
Depression
Cognitive Deficits
Muscle Weakness
Orthostatic Hypotension
Hearing Loss
Alcohol Usage

Number and types of medications taken:
Diuretics
Narcotic analgesics
Anti-hypertensives
Long acting sedatives

Think about advanced diabetics. The diabetes has caused visual problems (or blindness) and peripheral neuropathy (poor sensation in the hands and feet). This individual is extremely high risk for falling.

Hearing loss is usually overlooked. Remember, hearing and the system of balance are both in the inner ear. So, if there is an age related decline in hearing, there may also be an age related decline in the functioning of the vestibular system.

Cognitive deficits are also a key factor in fall risk. The automatic nature of balance diminishes in seniors. Muscle weakness, reduced active and passive dorsiflexion and the other medical issues listed are all contributing factors. Performing dual tasks puts an individual at risk for a fall. The elderly are using all their concentration to maintain their balance in a standing position. When you add a cognitive task, such as conversation, you might compromise their balance. So, if you are grocery shopping with a client or loved one and walking down the aisle of the market, in addition to the challenge of looking sideways while walking, if you ask the client or loved one a question, they are now a very high fall risk.

You can get an idea if someone has difficulty with combining ambulation and cognitive tasks when you are talking with them while out for a walk. If their walking speed is reduced when they are talking, they are a fall risk.

Sadly, older adults who fear falling will reduce their activity, fostering a sedentary lifestyle, decreasing muscle strength, ambulatory confidence, and the vicious cycle of fall risk is perpetuated.

Here are a few practical suggestions:

Remove loose throw rugs, especially those in the bathroom.
Pick up things that we typically leave on the floor, e.g., magazines, shoes, articles of clothing, boxes.
Ensure that pathways between rooms are clear and not blocked with furniture, especially in narrow hallways.
Lighting should be bright.
At night, when going to the bathroom, patients should turn on the lights, or at the very least, have a night light, lighting the way to the bathroom.
Have the client or loved one arrange for grab bars to be installed in the bathroom if necessary.
If the client or loved one is frail, they need to use an elevated toilet seat or grab bars around the toilet for more leverage when standing up.
Put skid resistant strips in the bathtub.

If an individual uses a walker or cane, how confident are they with its use? Is their equipment still appropriate for them? Is it working properly? Should their doctor arrange for a Physical Therapist to do an evaluation?

How is their standing endurance? Can they safely stand at the stove and cook a meal? Can they safely stand in the shower?

When a person with compromised balance is going to watch television and minimal distractions are critical for fall prevention, wait until they are safely seated in a chair, before you turn on the television. We don't want Oprah to say something exciting, drawing their attention while they are in the process of sitting down, causing them to fall!

Footwear is also an important consideration. Individuals at risk for falls should be wearing walking shoes or other firm soled shoe. Athletic, running type shoes, or those super-soft soled shoes are too soft and don't have a firm base of support. Discourage walking around in house slippers, especially the flip-flop type and don't wear a heel higher than 1 inch.

Hopefully, our awareness will not only help us reduce our loved one's fall risks, but keep you safe as well.

How To Write A Thank You Letter After An Interview - A Simple Formula for Uniqueness

Sending a thank you letter is as important as interview preparation. But they're tough to write, so people either tell themselves that not sending one doesn't matter, or they procrastinate until it's too late and almost pointless anyway. But anyone who tells themselves that foregoing a fundamental rule of etiquette doesn't matter, not only taints themselves in the mind of the interviewer, but misses two additional opportunities to sell.

A thank you letter is an additional sales piece. As I've said before, you're selling a product and the product is you. So beyond the reason of etiquette, the letter sells you as a polite person who recognizes that the interviewer gave them something valuable: time and consideration.

A fundamental rule of sales is to keep the product in front of the buyer and reinforce its benefits. So beyond the etiquette, the letter gives you ample space to comment on what you liked about the company, why your skills are of benefit to them, and how much you're interested. If something wasn't tied up, or was left unsatisfactorily, you should use the space to further address the issue.

When you miss the opportunity to reinforce your skills and tie them to the job requirements, you miss a chance to sell. When you fail to address a concern or answer a question and leave it to fester in the mind of the interviewer, you've failed to overcome an objection. And if a buyer has an objection to the product, if it isn't addressed, the likelihood of the sale is slim.

The third opportunity missed by skipping the thank you letter is the chance to keep your name in front of the buyer. Read newspapers? Watch TV? See the same ads over and over and over again? It's somewhat the same principle - if you keep your name in front of the hiring authority, they're more likely to remember you.

Thank you letters are one of the reasons it's important to take notes during an interview. Not only does it show good attention to detail, it saves you from having to scrunch your face up trying to remember some of the information you learned about the company and position during the interview. Because if you met with three separate people during one visit to the company, that's three thank you letters....three different thank you letters.
So let's look at how to create one of these so that it becomes a less odious task.

* First paragraph

Open with the obligatory thank you and include how you enjoyed the meeting. Say why. Maybe the people you met were exceptional. Perhaps their company philosophy was exactly what you had hoped for. Or they need to overhaul a department and you can't wait to sink your teeth into it because that's what you've got a stellar track record of doing. It doesn't matter. Pick something out, and put it down. But make it real.
* Second paragraph

What took place during your interview? Pull out a piece of information that pleased you, say what it was, and tell them why. For instance: I was particularly pleased to find that X company/the opportunity/your management style has/was/is/does whatever. This is exciting because...... . You can expand on whatever it is for a few sentences by elaborating: how it relates to something you've experienced and liked -- or didn't like. Discuss a particular aspect of the job you find appealing and reiterate why you'd be successful at it or how long you've been performing it or how similar it is to something you've done in the past.
* Third paragraph

You can add a similar paragraph if the second was fairly short. Or you can wind it up if it was a bit lengthy. If there was something that came up that needed clarification or about which they were dubious, address it and clear it up here.
* Fourth paragraph

Wind it up. Re-iterate your interest. Be enthusiastic! Leave the job speak behind. If you really want to be hired, let your interest shine through. There's nothing wrong with coming right out and saying, "I'd love to work with X company!"

Caution: Don't start every sentence with "I". It may be the easiest way to write the letter but it's not only repetitive, it's a turn off and egotistical. This process is about you getting a job, but it's about what they get out of it if they hire you.

If you really want the job, the letter will be easy to write because it will contain genuine impressions and sentiments. If you choose to skip the letter, perhaps you don't care if you're hired or not. But make that decision yours and withdraw from the process instead of letting the decision be made for you.

Active and Effective Listening Skills Tip #1 - Intention Training For Advanced Listening Skills

Listening Skills Can Be Exhausting!

When we listen, it seems there are so many different techniques to hear somebody. We can just listen and then express ourselves. Many times, we cannot wait to hear the other person take a breath so we can speak. Yet nobody really is heard. I am sure you have taken part in a conversation like that. I bet that you are exhausted after you are done. Another type of conversation is when we hear the other person go on and on and on without ever taking a breath. How do they do that without taking a breath? I always find it amazing, yet boring and tiring.

What I want to demonstrate in the next few articles is a communication model where all are heard and able to express. It is almost equal. Does that sound impossible? It is not. Yet on the other hand, maybe the other person really needs to vent, to be heard, and you agree to do so

This is the Most Important Step to Listening!

Asking myself, what is my intention to speaking with this person? This is the most important question I could ask myself. Intention is a plan. Therefore, what reason will I be communicating with this person? It is that simple, yet not so easy.

Honesty Comes in Handy When Listening:

My intention can be many strategies. Maybe I want something, to manipulate them. I told you that this is about honesty. Maybe, you think you have to listen to them. You do not. It would not be honest. So, back to our intention of communicating with someone with a clear intention. What really is your intention to listening to someone?

Identifying My Intention: Your intention should be one of authenticity. If my intention is to manipulate and only get what I want, in the end I will suffer. I want my intention to be where we meet everyone's wants. Do you think it is impossible? No, it is simple. When I speak to someone, I want my intention to be where I want to listen to the other. My intention is to understand the other person and that they understand me.

Visualize This Happening:

Imagine how this conversation would feel. Great? Seeing you totally focused on the other person and them later focused on what you are saying. It all begins with your intention. Before the Conversation: Set your intention, or your plan, before you speak to the person. If you are going to meet with someone whether for personal or a business conversation, take a few moments to decide what your intention is. If it is to understand and connect with the other person, then go ahead. If it is for other reasons, you may want to look at changing your intention. Maybe even cancel your meeting until you can transform your intention to a life enriching one.

Key to a Good Conversation in a Relationship

Many people find themselves helpless in a relationship. This happens to the best of us and, we feel like giving up. Relationships are more than a piece of work; to maintain them, you need a constant dose of wisdom and information on how to make them work. Online relationship advice has saved many a broken hearts and offered great relief to affected couples. Advice on relationships is invaluable and insightful, this is the major reason why you should not hesitate absorbing it. Online relationship advice will be found on independent sites as well as online dating websites. They provide dynamic and tested advise to enrich and direct relationships of couples. The online experts focus on all aspects of relationships. It really does not matter whether you are in a relationship or not. You will learn what it takes to build a lasting relationship. I came across very interesting advise on how to keep a conversation going. The first thing that was made clear is the difference between a conversation and a speech. Online experts on relationships state that this is the common mistake that many fall into. A speech is offered when you do not expect others to speak. A conversation happens between two people or more. Couples have pushed away opinions and thoughts of each other and, they are no longer willing to listen to each other. Communication still remains a key topic.

On the online relationship advice segment, I learned tips on how to keep a conversation going. There are 10 simple steps that will ensure you are ahead. Never be a conversational bully; this will only frustrate you and the people you are talking to. In all cases, relationships never work and fall outs are likely. As stated earlier, make sure you know the difference between speech and conversation. Before you talk face to face with your partner, make sure you do not avoid phone calls; this is great practice. Instead of insisting on making a point, follow every issue with a question. This way, you will arrive to the exact point you wish to make. This calls for a little wisdom but, when you are through this tips, you are sure to have a lot of wisdom to add value to your conversations. You need to make the conversation interesting and less boring. When you start talking all about your achievements, you will bore and leave out the other person. When having a conversation on the first date, avoid talking about your past relationships. You should be looking to start or establish something new. Show great interest in the other person. There is no greater way of boosting their confidence.

Differentiate between being interested and being nosy. You should always employ a subtle way to get to know the other person. Avoid pretense at all costs. No matter how the other person is into something, do not pretend to have the same enthusiasm. No matter what, honesty remains the best policy. Online relationship advise will leave you inspired and informed to make great decision in relationships. Finally in any conversation, be lively with have a positive drive. This will be felt by the other person and, it is contagious. If you feel a bit tense, feel free to say you feel tense, this clears the air as you warm up to a great conversation.

Working With Good Communication

Have you ever heard the phrase "we just can't communicate?" We just don't get along anymore and we never did anyway or what about, she just doesn't understand me. Most people identify communication with the ability to read or write well. This might not be the case as you will soon find out.

How many times have you been to the doctor's office and listen to an educated professional explain something to you that just doesn't make any sense. These people keep asking you, "Do you understand," Am I making myself clear and sometimes out of embarrassment because you don't want to look like an idiot you tell them yes I do understand. This isn't a good way to communicate either.

How do we communicate in a positive way to get our point across? I'm going to share a secret that works time and time again and some very successful communicators use this often. Ask the person you are communicating with if they understand what you just said, if someone is talking to you then use the statement, "Just to Make Sure That I Understand What You Just Said" and then repeat back your understanding of their conversation.

Sometimes just asking a view simple questions and clarifying your understanding can bring great benefits to any communication.

In some countries like Japan for instance you might find them reading your body language more than the words you are communicating with. Sometimes just by the way someone stands or reacts to something you said can give you a valuable insight to what can be understood in the conversation.

Don't forget however this could lead to a misunderstanding also. Again if you think someone understands how you are communicating with their body language, try not to assume that you know for a fact how they are reacting. Always ask them if they understand what you're talking about.

A person is responsible for what he says and to make sure that the other person understands completely the point he is trying to get across. I don't know how many times I have mentioned something to someone only later to find out there was a problem with my communication.

One of the greatest problems in business, marriage and most relationships are poor communication skills. Why not start using some of the simple skills used in this article to help with communication. You will start to see the benefits within a short period.

How do we do it? Why do we do it? And when are we going to change? How do we change our lives to become fulfilling sources of extreme happiness and joy. What is it going to take to open your eyes and finally seek the information you need.

If you're looking for a secret to happiness or a missing piece to the puzzle you quite possibly could find what you're looking for but no guarantees at spiritual books.

Better Relationships - Four Tips to Active Listening

Life is very precious and has many benefits and gifts. The most important benefit of life is the opportunity to share in a loving relationship with one or more people. If a loving relationship is the chief benefit of life, the greatest gift in life is a close friend or two with whom you can share your most intimate thoughts and feelings. Still, effective relationships include both give and take; both talking and listening. Unfortunately, just about everyone is an expert at speaking, but only a few are good at listening. This article will discuss the basic fundamentals of active listening.

Four tips of active listening are:

• Maintain eye contact - In the American culture, we value eye contact. When someone else is speaking, it is polite to maintain eye contact to show that you are listening. However, it should be noted that sometimes the listener can get so fixated on keeping eye contact that he or she fails to hear what the person is really saying.

• Eliminate distractions. In order to have an intimate conversation, you must eliminate all distractions in order that you might listen intently to what the other person is saying. This means turning off the television, stereo or video game and setting aside the latest novel in order to give your spouse or friend your undivided attention.

• Validate the person's words. The person's thoughts can be validated by summarizing what they share and feeding it back to them. For this to be effective, the feedback should be given without an air of judgment or commentary. When you state back to the person what you think she is attempting to say, she will feel treasured and will be open to share more of her life with you.

• Ask relevant open-ended questions. Closed-ended questions are conversation killers. They are questions (e.g. yes or no questions) that are limited to one word answers. Open-ended questions that are relevant to the conversation will encourage the other person to discuss the matter more thoroughly. Good questions help to clarify what the other person is attempting to say.

Friendship is one the most precious gifts of life. Conversation is one important aspect of building meaningful friendships. Listening is a very important part of an intimate conversation. This article has discussed four tips of active listening.

Listening is Patience

My definition of listening is, "Loving someone with your ears."

This brings to mind a common scripture quoted at many wedding ceremonies:

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres." 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

THEREFORE: If listening is loving, and if loving is patient...

Listening = Patience

Here are four practices to help your grow patient ears:

1. Have faith in the process. Natalie, my yoga instructor, constantly reminds her students to be patient and with and have faith in themselves during class. "Remember, you have sixty seconds to execute this posture," she'll say, "So take your time. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Have faith and trust that your body will be there."

Similarly, in your listening practice, you need to believe that the speaker's intention will eventually show up. Even when they're tap-dancing around the real issues. Even when they're taking too long to get to the point. Sure, you don't have all day to sit there in silence, but sometimes you can only probe so much.

NOW HEAR THIS: Faith means, "finally allowing it to happen."

2. Leading others to lead themselves. Marjorie, a writer I once coached, came to me with a challenge about discipline. Because of her hectic schedule, she was unable to squeeze in regular blocks of time to complete her project. Eventually, after asking a few questions about her daily schedule, it occurred to me that her problem wasn't about discipline; it was about time management.

Now, the old, impatient me would have flat-out TOLD her that. But part of being a patient listener - as I've learned from countless screw-ups of my own - is leading the other person to lead herself. In the words of the Tao Te Ching, "A good leader takes the people to the finish and makes them say, 'We did it on our own.'"

NOW HEAR THIS: Listen a little and they'll give you their problem; listen a LOT and they'll give you their solution.

3. Don't immediately come to a conclusion. Listening impatience is kind of like stress: everybody manifests it differently. For example, some people tap their pen, others incessantly shake their left leg, while others whip out their Crackberry and start text messaging their boyfriend.

For me, listening impatience has a tendency to manifest in my arm. That is, I ALWAYS have to be the first one in the discussion to ask a question. Sometimes even before the speaker finishes asking, "Do we have any questions?"

"Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy! I have a question! Me! Me! Me! Pick me! Oh MAN what a great question I'm going to ask! Right here! Right here!"

I know. I'm working on it. And I've been this way since I was four years old, so it may take a while.

Anyway, uncontrollable arm ticks aside, here's the secret to remember: You don't (always) have to IMMEDIATELY come to a conclusion. Whether you're practicing patience at a staff meeting, in a seminar or during a meeting with your boss, don't be so quick to impose your own answers. Just pause. Listen first.

NOW HEAR THIS: Decide if your thought is a reaction or a response.

4. Mobilize people's inner resources. As The Listener, few things are more beautiful than watching someone realize a truth on their OWN. In The Sacred Art of Listening, author Kay Lindahl writes, "If we're still like water in a pond, the other person can see his reflection in it."

That's your job. To practice attentive silence. To let people see, find, say, do, know, learn and discover on their own. Resist the need to take over while respecting the speaker's speed of self-discovery. No pushing. No forcing. Gentle nudging. Facilitating a natural process, you enable and nurture the speaker's rhythm and guide him to make the best choices.

NOW HEAR THIS: When someone is listened to, she can more easily clarify her thoughts and feelings

Now that we've identified four key practices to enhance your listening patience, let's conclude with an affirmation. I suggest you print it out, post it in a visible location and read it daily as reminder of your role as The Listener:

THE PATIENT LISTENER'S CREED

When I pause, I listen to the silences.
When I pause, I respect which questions want to be asked next.

When I speak, it's only to improve on the silence.
When I speak, it's to make a difference and contribute to the conversation.

When I engage, I make it easy for others to talk.
When I engage, I grant others adequate space to talk.

When I comment, I choose NOT to inject too much of myself.
When I comment, I choose to contribute to, not disrupt the conversation.
When I comment, I choose to be helpful and not intrude upon the speaker.

I am a Patient Listener, and I know how to love people with my ears.

LET ME ASK YA THIS...

Are you patient enough in your listening?

LET ME SUGGEST THIS...

For the list called, "27 Reasons People Aren't Listening to You," send an email to me, and I'll send you the list for free!

Nonverbal Communication - What's it All About?

Communication is critical to continued human development throughout our life span. It is what allows us to share thoughts, feelings, wonderings, and knowledge with others. Whether you are a verbal or nonverbal communicator, the vast majority of communication we do is through nonverbal channels.

So if nonverbal communication makes up a substantial portion of our communicative experience, what does it involve? Many of us associate facial expression and gestures with nonverbal communication, but these are not the only two types involved. There are, in fact, eight different types of nonverbal communication:

* Facial Expression This makes up the largest proportion of nonverbal communication. Large amounts of information can be conveyed through a smile or frown. The facial expressions for happiness, sadness, anger, and fear are similar across cultures throughout the world.
* Gestures Common gestures include pointing, waving, and using fingers to indicate number amounts.
* Paralinguistics This includes factors such as tone of voice, loudness, inflection, and pitch. Tone of voice can be powerful. The same sentence said in different tones can convey different messages. A strong tone of voice may indicate approval or enthusiasm, whereas the same sentence said with a hesitant tone of voice may convey disapproval or lack of interest.
* Body Language and Posture A person's posture and movement can also convey a great deal of information. Arm crossing or leg-crossing conveys different meanings depending on the context and the person interpreting them. Body language is very subtle, and may not be very definitive.
* Proxemics This refers to personal space. The amount of space a person requires depends on each individual's preference, but also depends on the situation and other people involved in the situation.
* Eye Gaze Looking, staring, and blinking are all considered types of eye gaze. Looking at another person can indicate a range of emotions including hostility, interest, or attraction.
* Haptics This refers to communicating through touch. Haptics is especially important in infancy and early childhood.
* Appearance Our choice of color, clothing, hairstyles, and other factors affecting our appearance are considered a means of nonverbal communication.

By the time most children are one year old, they are experts in nonverbal communication. They have spent the whole first year of their lives making their wants and needs known, as well as sharing their experiences through nonverbal channels. Around the time of their first birthday, they add the next layer to their dynamic communication repertoire with the verbal piece. Even with the addition of verbal communication, nonverbal expression continues to be the main mode of communication for children as they add more and more words to their vocabulary. Even after children are talking in sentences, nonverbal communication continues to add meaning and structure to the messages being sent and received.

This use and understanding of nonverbal communication becomes automatic for 'neuro-typical' children. It is so automatic that many of us are completely unaware that we employ facial expressions and gestures, or that we are using this information to enhance the words we are hearing from our communication partner. We continue to use this mode of communication throughout life.

Think about the word "no," which can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the nonverbal communication that is being conveyed along with the word. If we say "noooo" with a wrinkled nose and a questioning tone or funny voice, this could convey that we are unsure or don't really believe what we are hearing. If we hear someone say "NO!" with a loud, or harsh voice, we can interpret that they person is angry or wants an action to be terminated. If someone asks you if you would like a drink, you may answer with "no"; but your tone of voice will most likely be even with little inflection, and your face may just be neutral. In each of these examples the person was saying "no," but there were three different meanings being conveyed. Without nonverbal communication, it would be difficult to know how to interpret the word.

Many children with autism spectrum disorders have difficulty interpreting multiple modes of communication, and because of this they often miss the nonverbal communication piece that allows accurate interpretation of what is said. In the examples provided above, most children with autism spectrum disorders would only hear the word "no" but miss the nonverbal pieces which help to interpret which "no" is being communicated. This misinterpretation can lead to frustration on the part of both the communicator and the child who is struggling to understand what is happening. At other times, the child may interpret a facial expression, tone of voice, or gesture but not hear the words that went with the nonverbal, which again results in miscommunication. These breakdowns make it difficult for the child to make sense of his/her world.

Working to improve the use and understanding of nonverbal communication is essential for a person with an autism spectrum or neurological disorder. In most cases, working to improve nonverbal communication is the best place to begin improving communication abilities. Expanding the ability to use and understand nonverbal communication provides the necessary foundation for building meaningful dynamic communication. Just as a neuro-typical infant begins by communicating nonverbally, going back and teaching this mode of communication for children who may have missed this step is the foundation for productive communication throughout life.

Teaching nonverbal communication should be done in a natural way that makes sense for each individual child. Telling a child, "look at my face," or showing a child several pictures of people's faces and having him/her identify the emotions he sees is not a natural way to work on nonverbal communication. Spending time doing activities with the child where the adult uses very little verbal communication, but is communicating through nonverbal channels, is an effective way to begin introducing nonverbal communication. Playing games where you have changed the rules slightly so as to use only nonverbal communication can also be a fun and more natural way of working on nonverbal communication. For example, you might play Simon Says, using a made up signal for when Simon says to do something. Playing charades can also be a fun way to work on nonverbal communication in a natural context. Take a walk with your child; but instead of saying, "hey look at that dog," you might pause, point and vocalize, "oh" with a rising inflection to draw attention. There are many ways to work on nonverbal communication that can be explored and used to build this critical foundational piece of communication.

Successful Relationship Communication - 4 Pillars

Relationships are hard. They are hard to get started and they are just as hard to keep going. Luckily, the secret of keeping a relationship flowing is no longer a secret. The solution is understanding relationship communication.

Below is a list of 4 foundations to successful relationship communication. Keep in mind that each of these "pillars" is equally important for a relationship's survival.

1) Communication is more than just a part of relationships; it is the relationship. Interpersonal relations can't be formed, or even maintained, without actively communicating. If communication stops, the relationship eventually will too. Therefore, the overall importance of communication in general is undeniable.

2) It is impossible for you to not communicate. Regardless of if you share your feelings with your partner or remain silent - if you are in the presence someone else, you are communicating with that person - if by no other means than nonverbally. Note: it is important to remember that both the intentional and unintentional messages we send out to other people are often translated incorrectly (the intended meaning is misunderstood or inaccurate).

3) Meanings are in the people, not the words. When humans hear a message the process of translating it into a specific meaning depends on that particular individual and the circumstances surrounding them. When you hear the word "dog", you may think of Lassi while your partner thinks about a Cujo.

With millions of thoughts speeding though our brains, it is impossible for two people always to think the same thing. In light of this, just imagine how many differences can arise in meaning when considering terms like "love", "space", "intimate", or "commit".

4) Communication is permanent. Once an individual receives and processes a message, it is irreversible. If you come to regret something you said to your partner, all you can do is apologize and hope for forgiveness. The message can't be erased. Therefore, avoid rushing relationship communication and overly emotional communication (whether it is passionate love talk or an intense argument).

Conversing when emotionally aroused/upset often leads to sending messages that we did not mean or intend on saying. Also, be aware of the related dangers of alcohol/drug usage and relationship communication.

With all 4 of these pillars in mind you will be much better prepared to successfully communicate within your relationship.

How to Communicate For Results, Not Just to Be Understood

Sometimes it is difficult to know what we want to say or how to say it. There is another approach. Ask yourself "What I am I trying to accomplish?" If for example you are trying to discuss a financial matter rather trying to figure out what to tell them figure out what you want to accomplish with the situation. If you have loaned someone money and want to see if they have forgotten your approach would be different than if you goal is to get the money that is owed you. If for example I were trying to get money from someone that I had loaned money to and I thought maybe they didn't have it yet I needed it I wouldn't do me any good to talk around the subject in fact it could make the situation worse. However, if I make a comment like "I was totally stressed over the rent, then I remembered you are giving me money and that means I am all set." I didn't rely on someone else to provide the outcome I was looking for I controlled that.

Recently we had an opportunity that from anyone's viewpoint looked like a no brainer. However, upon further examination realized it would be a financial loss to our company at this time. Realizing the value of the opportunity from a market and brand awareness point only we didn't want to burn any bridges and prohibit future opportunities. Our approach was quite simple we need to walk away in a manner that implies this might work at another time. While we were focused on what we wanted to say we were having difficulty finding the right words. The moment we shifted to what we are trying to accomplish we found the situation much easier to deal with.

Regardless of the situation, work, home, family ask what am I trying to accomplish from this conversation and know the answer. If you aren't sure what you want to achieve especially if it is a difficult one then maybe you should wait until you are. Our words have power and we may not be able to choose how people react, however we are responsible for the words we put out there. Always speak honestly and from your heart, never from anger or betrayal. In any situation you need to know what you are trying to accomplish.

Interpersonal Communication - All About It

Take a second - How would you define interpersonal communication?

Would you say that "two people talking" would define it accurately?

Not exactly.

For example: Neither a grocery store clerk asking if you "want paper or plastic" nor when you ask for a specific cup of coffee at Starbucks would qualify as interpersonal communication. Instead, those two previous examples would be a more mechanical, business form of communicating. In light of this, we can conclude that the definition of "two people chatting" is just too broad, simple, and general.

So... Is interpersonal communication basically the act of sharing personal details or secrets with another person?

It's a possible scenario, but it's not a requirement.

It's usually the case that if two people are experiencing true interpersonal communication, that they will already be at the degree of closeness that is needed for consideration of sharing secrets to begin with. However, again, sharing dark details is not a requirement.

Would you say that "romantic" and "interpersonal" are interchangeable terms in this type of communication?

Not always.

While romantic relationships NEED interpersonal communication, this type of communicating can occur without a romantic fire burning between the two individuals. Examples would include friends, neighbors, coworkers, siblings and relatives.

So what is this interpersonal communication?

Interpersonal Communication is when two people communicate beyond the roles of the circumstances at that specific time.

When your teacher takes the time to speak with you about your weekend, when you invite your doctor over to your family cookout, when your boss invites you over for dinner - those are all likely situations leading to interpersonal communication.

In each of the above scenarios the two individuals are participating in communication that goes beyond what their roles in society and relationships prescribe. Thus, interpersonal communication is born.

Save Your Relationship

Relationships go through hard times and easy times. There may even be an occasion in which one partner cheats on the other. It could be a one time deal or it could be an ongoing affair. But even if that happens the relationship does not necessarily have to end.

Let me tell you about a situation a friend of mine was dealing with. I will call her Sandy. Sandy called me one day to say that she thought her husband was having an affair. Because she was so upset I went right over to console her.

When I got there I found that Sandy looked as if she had not slept in days and the house was very messy. After a brief conversation I talked Sandy into taking a shower so we could go out for lunch. Fortunately she agreed and we actually ended up having a pleasant lunch.

She did share with me some of the intimate details of the problems she and her husband had been having. That may not be the best thing to do when you are having issues with your partner. But it did seem to make my friend feel better.

Just so you know though I do not advocate nor advise that you share details with friends. But let me continue and I will explain as I go. Sandy said that her husband had been working a lot of overtime. The long hours were only adding to her suspicions.

Here is a tip, be careful with accusations and suspicions that have no solid foundation. I asked my friend if her husband was being paid extra for the overtime he had been working. She seemed surprised that I would ask that and explained that he had made enough extra money for them to make a few purchases that they had been putting off.

Tip number two, look for evidence of whatever it is that you believe as well as something that validates what your partner tells you. The next complaint Sandy claimed was that because her husband is working longer hours he is tired when he comes home and they have not spent much time together.

My friend explained that her husband has not been doing any of his chores around the house. But the final blow was when her husband called to say that some of the guys from the office were stopping for a drink after work.

I am sure you can guess what Sandy was thinking. So she waited up for her husband. I wanted to know how late he was and she said he was home by 10pm. As you can imagine the accusations were flown in his face when he walked in the door.

Because Sandy was upset she said a lot of things that should not have been said. And because her husband was tired and also fed up with the accusations the argument escalated. It ended when Sandy told her husband to get out of the house.

With the details cut and dry like this it is easy to see where the problems began and what went wrong.

First of all you can see that Sandy was overly suspicious. After all, her husband had proof of his actual work time because he was bringing home extra money. But perhaps he was at fault because he was working so much. Obviously if the money was going for purchases they could have done without so much.

And Sandy could have been more understanding about him being tired when he got home. Maybe some of the money could have been tagged for paying someone to help with some of the chores around the house.

Learning how to talk things out before the problem gets out of hand is a basic tool when you are trying to save a relationship. It seems that many break ups occur because tempers are hot and feelings are hurt. Tip number three is do not have a serious or important discussion until you can do so calmly.

Relationship and Communication Power

In a love-relationship, for example marriage, communication is what makes the involvement strong and of a positive influence. A relationship is the connection between two or more people or groups and their involvement with one another.

Communication is the exchange of information between people, for example by means of speaking, writing or using a common system of signs or behaviour.

If you are going to have a good and successful relationship, communication is the key. You have to know what your partner wants and he or she has to know what you want for the relationship to work. The best way to go about this is to communicate. It is one way of expressing ourselves on how we feel and to get into understanding better. There are several ways to build up communication. The most common is speaking to each other by phone, personal or internet chat section.

In a special way, you can communicate also through sending songs where you express yourself as well.

Sometimes, things that are unclear or blur come up through communication. The easiest way to clear things up is by "asking". Without communication, there will be friction. Each party will want to be on the defensive, trying to protect himself or herself just because he or she doesn't know what's going on in the mind of the other person. This tension can be eased through communication.

An easy way to go about this is to be open to your partner. Don't keep secret. Having a secretive nature will only succeed in making your brain choked up beyond bearable capacity. Though some people think in opening up, there is no privacy. To them, this might make them predictable and make their partner take them for granted. This is not true. It only ends up making you keep too many problems that need be shared. Remember, a problem shared is half solved.

Why do you think people go on the internet? To talk to others on what they have in mind of course! You'll agree with me that the" e-thing" is doing us a lot of good just because people are talking. Imagine how boring it is to be locked up in a house all alone to yourself for some days. It's better imagined than experienced.

Communication is so powerful that it can make good a relationship that is almost written off.
