Definition of Communication

The ancient meaning of communication is to share. This remains the essence of the meaning of communication until today. When people communicate, they are sharing message and information with each other. When they communicate effectively, they are sharing the same message : that is the listener understands what the speaker or writer means.

Communication is the process by which two or more people exchange information using a shared set of symbols. Basically communication involves :

1. The transfer of information from one person to another person
2. It involves at least two people, a sender and a receiver
3. The goal is to make the receiver understand the message
4. Communication is what the receiver understands not what the sender says
